Years ago it was GOLD! Breckenridge was a gold town located a short 9 miles from Frisco Colorado and after a series of booms and bust, sometime in the mid 1900's Breckenridge was listed as a ghost town. Breckenridge today is World Class ski resort and town in Summit County, Colorado with some of its gold today being mountain real estate like Frisco homes and other Colorado Real Estate such as Frisco condos and townhomes - not to forget the ski town and the white gold - snow. And all within easy access from I-70 by taking the Frisco exit on Summit Boulevard through the town and then 9 more miles filled with Mountain Real Estate to Breckenridge.
A friendly, genuine historic mining town located at the base of the spectacular Ten Mile Range that runs from where Frisco real estate starts below Peak 1 to Breckenridge and Peak 10. The resort ski town of Breckenridge offers world class skiing in the winter and an astounding variety of summer activities from golf on a Jack Nicklaus designed course to hiking up to your favorite mountain peak. And if that's not enough, the abundant shops, boutiques, galleries, restaurants and saloons will surely spice up your visit to Breckenridge. There is even a bike path from Breckenridge to Frisco Colorado that meanders through Frisco Real Estate for those with a little extra energy and those interested in purchasing Colorado Real Estate.
While Breckenridge is certainly a wonderful resort town located in Summit County, Colorado the county offers many other areas of interest, ski resorts, Colorado real estate and activities. Summit County towns are loaded with mountain real estate such as Dillon condos, Frisco houses, Keystone base area, Copper Mountain townhomes, and Silverthorne ranches.
As mentioned above it wasn’t always one of the world's greatest ski resort towns in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, but at one point in time Breckenridge was more of a rough-and-tumble town full of miners looking to strike it rich rather than looking to buy real estate in Frisco. And to service all the miners there were bars like the Gold Pan Saloon that was actually originally established in 1859! Today after a day of skiing visitors can relax in their very own Frisco Property, or even one of the many Frisco condos or other Co Real Estate and then one can still go to the Gold Pan and enjoy some of their historic libations once they are all rested up.
Soon after the miners came the railroad to Breckenridge. The South Park & Pacific Railroad Company came over the pass (Today known as Boreas Pass) down into the town of Breckenridge. Visitors to Breckenridge can still drive, walk or ride their bike up this old railroad track all the way to the top of Boreas Pass - the very same scenic route enjoyed by those riding the railroad in the late 1800's.
While many may not have made their fortunes in gold some did, in fact a 13.5 pound gold nugget was discovered close to Breckenridge by local miners! That nugget was named Tom's Baby and is on display at the Colorado Museum of Natural History in Denver, Colorado.
Skiing arrived via Lumber Company from Kansas. The Rounds and Porter Lumber Company was issued a permit for new ski resort which was the beginning of the Breckenridge we know and love today. The official opening day for the Breckenridge Ski Resort was December 16, 1961 with almost 17,000 skier visits that first year.
It is amazing to think about the fact that Breckenridge has grown from a summer hunting ground for White River and Ute Native Americans, to a mining town booming in a gold rush, to sleepy town until a world class ski resort blossomed as I-70 was finished in 1973 which solidified Breckenridge and Summit County as a destination resort full of activities, resort real estate, and, of course, skiing.
The population of Breckenridge was around 400 just prior to the opening of the ski area in 1961. Today the population is over 3,200 with a peak in visitors coming from residents, second-home owners, day visitors and skiers which brings Breckenridge's local population to over 33,000 during peak times during the ski season. With the increase in people has come an increase in resort real estate, homes, condos and townhomes to accommodate all the locals and visitors alike.
